This was my MIL about my husband!!! He has gone by a nickname exclusively since he left for college which 28 years later she still refuses to use and corrects those who call him otherwise.
I had one nn possibility for each kid that I'm not fond of. DS used the one for his name for 3 months to differentiate himself in a class in 7th grade. I just didn't say anything, asked if I could call him the usual nn (which he said yes), and he dropped it after that time period because it was only useful to him then. I must admit I was relieved that it didn't stick, but we gave them nn rich names purposely so they would be versatile for the person it was given to.
